Ozil insists he is happy to play under Emery at Arsenal

Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil has poured cold water on suggestions of a fractious relationship with Unai Emery as he reveals his delight in playing under the guidance of the Spaniard.

Ozil, 29, played a starring role as the Gunners defeated a ruthless Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon with the German getting his name on the scoresheet after Granit Xhaka opened proceedings.

Emery was made to come out and deny reports last month of a training ground bust-up with the former Real Madrid man after he missed the 3-1 win over West Ham United through illness.

Since then, the Gunners have secured two more victories in the league and are currently enjoying a run of three consecutive wins after suffering back-to-back defeats at the start of the campaign, albeit against Manchester City and Chelsea.

Speaking to reporters after the match (via the Metro), Ozil spoke of his admiration for Emery: “I am very happy to play for Arsenal and especially for the new coach.

“He knows what he wants and the team accepts that, we have a good relationship. We score and we are happy, even the players that don’t play, we are all team.”

Ozil made his 200th Arsenal appearance across all competitions for the club at St James’ Park, and during his stint in north London he has scored 38 goals and provided 66 assists.

The German refused to take all the credit for the victory over the Magpies despite producing a stellar second-half performance, instead heaping praise on his teammates for securing three vital points.

He added: “Really, 200? I’m happy but most important we take the three points.

“Congratulations to the whole team, we played well. Newcastle were good, aggressive. We showed our passion and took the points.”

The Gunners next face Ukrainian side Vorskla Poltava in the opening group game of the Europa League on Thursday.
