Why Jurgen Klopp subbed off Jordan Henderson at half-time in Huddersfield 0-1 Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed Jordan Henderson‘s early withdrawal on Saturday was purely a precaution.

The Reds beat Huddersfield Town 1-0 on Saturday evening to join Manchester City on 23 points at the top of the Premier League table.

Mohamed Salah scored the only goal of the match in the first half, but the result was slightly marred by captain Jordan Henderson having to be replaced at half-time due to injury.

But Klopp has admitted he is hopeful Henderson will not be a long-term miss, given the early signs of the injury, which was a slight hamstring tightness.

“I hope so,” told reporters (via Goal) when asked if Henderson’s substitution was precautionary.

“It was not that he felt nothing but he didn’t feel a lot. He wanted to carry on – that’s a good sign. We decided no. Hopefully it’s nothing.”

Henderson has had a drawn-out start to the season having played a big part in England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals.

The midfielder has started five of his nine Premier League appearances to date, playing the full 90 minutes on just two occasions as Klopp also tries to rotate Naby Keita, Georginio Wijnaldum and James Milner in a trio.

Henderson will unlikely be risked in Liverpool’s next match, which sees them take on Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Liverpool’s injury list

With their success focused around a small group of players, injuries can prove costly for Liverpool should key stars be ruled out.

Currently, the Reds are without Naby Keita, Sadio Mane and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with the latter not expected to return until the tail end of the season.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s win over Huddersfield, Klopp said of Keita and Mane (via the Express): “They are normal issues. Both are not too serious; they cannot play today, which is never good, but it shouldn’t be that long.

“Sadio especially, we have to see how it develops in the next few days. Naby, maybe we have to be a bit more patient.”

The most recent international break also brought doubts surrounding the fitness of Salah, Milner and Virgil van Dijk though the trio did make it to the Huddersfield victory – all starting.
