Sarri all-but confirms Moses and Drinkwater will leave Chelsea

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has admitted Victor Moses and Danny Drinkwater do not fit into his plans for the club.

The Italian provided reporters with an explanation of why the pair have barely featured in his side since he arrived at the club in the summer, and all-but confirmed they will likely leave the club.

Moses was a key player during Antonio Conte’s two-season tenure at Stamford Bridge where he excelled on as a wing-back for the Italian and helped him clinch the Premier League and FA Cup.

Drinkwater was integral to Leicester City’s title-winning campaign in 2015/16 and arrived in west London last season from the Foxes for £35 million, but the midfielder has only featured once so far for Sarri when he came off the bench in the Community Shield back in August.

Sarri did not mince his words with reporters and told a press conference that he doesn’t think either player is suitable for his plans.

“I think the situation is that Drinkwater for me is not suitable for a midfield with two other midfielders. I told him two months ago what I think,” Sarri said, as reported by Goal.

“Moses is more suitable for playing wing back than like a winger or a full back, I think. I don’t know [if they have a future]. They have to improve but their characteristics are a little bit different.”

Another player who is struggling to break into Chelsea’s first team at the moment is 22-year-old midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The England international played tremendously while on-loan with Crystal Palace last season and he also excelled with the Three Lions at the World Cup in the summer.

Despite his impressive performances the Londoner has found himself still singing for his supper at Stamford Bridge, but Sarri insists that he won’t allow him to go back on loan in January.

“I don’t know but I think that if you are 19 or 20 then it is better to go on loan,” Sarri said. “It is better to play and get experience. It is not possible that every player is good enough to play here when he is 19 or 20.

“When you are 22 after one or two loans then you have to fight to try to have minutes here.

Loftus-Cheek could start against his former club on Sunday as the Blues welcome Palace to Stamford Bridge.
