After proving Mourinho wrong, this Man Utd player can be as valuable as Mbappe - Cascarino

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has the potential to sit alongside Kylian Mbappe as one of the best strikers in world football, according to Tony Cascarino.

Rashford’s career had somewhat stalled under Jose Mourinho, but he is now thriving under the guidance of interim coach Ole Gunnar Solskaer.

Could Rashford emulate Mbappe? Five things to know…

  1. Both players rose to prominence in the 2015/16 season but their careers really took off the following campaign.
  2. Mbappe netted 26 goals across all competitions and clinched the Ligue 1 title with Monaco before securing a record move to Paris Saint-Germain.
  3. Since then the France international has won the World Cup, three further domestic trophies and the Kopa Trophy, as well as placing fourth in the 2018 Ballon d’Or running.
  4. Meanwhile Rashford, despite winning three trophies with Man Utd during that time – including the Europa League in 2017 – is still some way off replicating the achievements of Mbappe.
  5. However, since Mourinho’s departure Rashford has netted four goals in five league matches, and looks to have revitalised his career, breeding hope for United fans that he could yet realise his undoubted potential.

Rashford played a starring role as the Red Devils pulled off an exceptional 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, with the 21-year-old netting the only goal of the game, and now Cascarino believes the striker can really push on.

“Marcus Rashford was also terrific,” Cascarino told the Times.

“After the FA Cup final in May, José Mourinho said he lacked presence; he doesn’t now. With the pace and threat he possesses, he could become as valuable as Kylian Mbappé.”

Rashford’s low strike beyond the reach of Hugo Lloris was his seventh league goal of the season, and his eighth in all competitions, while he also has six Premier League assists to his name.

The Wythenshawe-born striker will now be looking to kick on and surpass his previous best of 13 across all competitions, and United play host to Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.

‘De Gea delivered Wembley’s best display since Jan Tomaszewski’

Rashford’s goal may have determined the outcome of the match, but it was David de Gea who stole the headlines for his sensational display.

Spurs had a number of chances to draw level in the second half but were thwarted by the imperious form of the Spanish goalkeeper, who made an astonishing 11 saves throughout the match.

It was a performance worthy of a clean sheet and Cascarino went as far as to say that it was reminiscent of Jan Tomaszewski’s exploits for Poland during the nation’s famous 1-1 draw against England in 1973 – a result which sent Poland to the 1974 World Cup finals at the expense of the Three Lions.

Cascarino added: “I can’t recall a goalkeeping display at Wembley like that since Jan Tomaszewski’s for Poland against England in 1973.

“David de Gea has not been at his best this season but he’s one of the best around — everything Spurs threw at him he saved and not always with his hands. It’s a skill for a goalkeeper to use his feet the way he did yesterday. The finishing wasn’t great but that wouldn’t give De Gea the credit he deserves.”
