Carragher reacts to reports a brand-new contender for the Man Utd job has emerged

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher doubts that Gareth Southgate would leave the England job to take over at Manchester United.

Southgate has been rumoured to be in the running to inherit the role from caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the end of the season.

Gareth Southgate to Man Utd? Five key things to know…

  1. Southgate guided England to their best finish at the World Cup since Italia ’90 and has demonstrated talent in developing young players.
  2. Despite their good finish, the Three Lions struggled to create much from open play and relied heavily on set pieces to score goals.
  3. A club like Man Utd are likely to want a manager with a proven track record at club level.
  4. Southgate’s only stint in club management was with Middlesbrough, with whom he was relegated from the Premier League.
  5. United are also linked with Zinedine Zidane and Mauricio Pochettino.

Carragher doesn’t think a proposed move for the Three Lions boss will happen, as Southgate has a golden opportunity to win a major trophy with England at the European Championships next year.

“No, I don’t see that happening for two reasons really,” Carragher, who was appearing on Sky Sports’ Goals on Sunday, said.

“I think that Gareth Southgate has done such a good job with England to leave now wouldn’t feel right.

“He’s building something there, even what they have done since the World Cup. I think that he will want another tournament at least to try and do something big.”

Carragher claims that Southgate’s chances of winning England’s first major trophy since the 1966 World Cup could be a reality as the semi-finals and the final of Euro 2020 will be played at Wembley.

“Don’t forget that the European Championships are almost at home really with the semi-finals and finals being at Wembley,” Carragher added.

“If England could get that far it gives them a great opportunity of lifting a trophy. I wouldn’t expect Gareth to leave that post just yet.

“Also, I think Manchester United may have one or two options before they got to Gareth who I think they would want to nail down first.”

Pochettino not entertaining United speculation

With Solskjaer’s position at the club stated as temporary by the club, speculation over who will replace him at the end of the season has persisted since the Norwegian arrived at Old Trafford in December.

Pochettino has routinely been mooted as the favourite to take over at United, as the Argentine was earmarked as an option by Sir Alex Ferguson following Louis van Gaal’s departure in 2016. The board at Old Trafford eventually opted for Jose Mourinho instead.

The Portuguese’s tenure ended in tears last month when he was sacked after guiding United to their worst start to a league campaign in 28 years.

Pochettino was gracious when Mourinho left and remains resolutely quiet over speculation regarding his future.

“I know very well that my name, like many other names, are in the media, but of course that is not the thing that worries me or is in my mind,” Pochettino told reporters.

“That is a business for Manchester United and of course it’s a wish from a person who is doing a fantastic job since he arrived, like Ole. I am so happy here at Tottenham.”
