Gary Neville backs "devastating" forward to become Man Utd great

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has tipped Marcus Rashford to become a special talent for the club.

Rashford is one of many players enjoying revitalised form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having struggled for consistency with Jose Mourinho in charge.

Can Rashford become a Manchester United great? Five key things to know…

  1. Marcus Rashford made his first-team debut in 2016 under Louis van Gaal and wasted no time making a name for himself.
  2. The 21-year-old would continue to be a part of United’s first team under Mourinho but only scored five Premier League goals in his first full campaign.
  3. Poor utilisation of Rashford was one of many complaints United fans had over former boss Mourinho.
  4. But Neville believes Rashford is on the right track once more and has tipped the forward for greatness.
  5. Marcus Rashford has scored as many goals in four league games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (three) as he did in his previous 14 under José Mourinho this season.

Rashford was on the scoresheet in United’s 2-0 win over Newcastle United on Wednesday night, which moved them to within six points of Chelsea in fourth place.

And Neville has high hopes for Rashford fulfilling his potential at United, telling Sky Sports: “The spring in the counter-attack is there and Rashford playing up front is fantastic – I love him to bits.

“He’s played nearly 150 games at the age of 21 and his potential is enormous. It’s actually now stepping up beyond the potential to where he will be a top-class player.”

Neville also backed Rashford to have more of an impact on the team than Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, who is enjoying his own revitalisation under Solksjaer.

“People will talk about Romelu Lukaku and how is he getting back in the team – don’t worry about that, worry about the kid that’s playing that’s going to devastate teams,” he added.

“He gives them mobility. They just need more energy up front. Lukaku has not been at his best.

“He has earned his chance. He gives them something different and he is a fantastic player. He is on the right trajectory to become something really special for Manchester United.”

Rashford backed by Solskjaer to keep improving

It is not just Gary Neville with big dreams for Rashford at United; current caretaker manager Solskjaer has also spoken of his happiness in working with the youngster.

The Norwegian, who scored 127 goals in 364 games for United himself, believes he can help Rashford improve his goalscoring during his brief time at the club.

“I think Marcus has got his own motivation to become the best player he can be,” Solskjaer said prior to United’s win over Newcastle on Wednesday.

“He has got far more than I did in terms of his physical attributes, his pace, his strength and striking the ball from outside the box.

“But maybe I can give him a little bit of the nous I had inside the box. I’m talking about the little moves you make to get free, that little bit of calmness in front of goal.

“Marcus is only 21. He’s still learning. The most important thing I can see is to just settle him down in front of goal.

“I’ve seen him rush a few finishes. He thinks ‘I’ve got to get a shot off early’ when sometimes you just need to pass it past the keeper. I always say that the goal never moves. So I am really looking forward to working with him.”

Rashford has started all four games under Solskjaer this season, to add to another nine in the Premier League with Mourinho in charge.
