Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has sensationally admitted he didn’t know anything about the club’s move for Borussia Dortmund playmaker Christian Pulisic until it was announced.
The Blues confirmed the transfer of Pulisic on Wednesday, which also saw the talented American stay at Borussia Dortmund on loan until the end of the season.
Sarri didn’t know? Here’s what you need to know…
- Chelsea confirmed the signing of Pulisic for £58 million from Bundesliga leaders Dortmund.
- The 20-year-old will stay on loan at Dortmund until the end of the 2018/19 season.
- The transfer fee confirms that Pulisic is the most expensive American footballer of all-time.
- According to Sarri, he knew nothing about the genuine attempt to sign the player until it was advertised on Wednesday.
Chelsea drew with Southampton 0-0 on Wednesday evening in a disappointing match at Stamford Bridge. Sarri was naturally asked by reporters what his thoughts were on the Pulisic transfer.
To the disbelief of many, Sarri admitted he didn’t know anything about the transfer, stating that Pulisic was a name he passed judgement on a month ago but didn’t think about until the deal was done.
Speaking to reporters post-match (via the Mail) Sarri said: “I didn’t know anything about Pulisic yesterday.
“The club asked my opinion about him one month ago. My opinion was positive and today I’ve known that the deal is done.”
The blues for Sarri who still needs a striker following 0-0 blank against Saints
Wednesday’s match between the west London hosts and the travelling south coast side will not stay in the memory of too many football fans, although Saints will be delighted with a point at Stamford Bridge.
New Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl organised his defence in such a fashion that it caused Chelsea headaches throughout the 90 minutes and despite the array of talent in the Blues ranks, they couldn’t break down a sturdy Southampton backline.
With the arrival of Pulisic, Chelsea will get to see another exciting prospect strut his stuff at Stamford Bridge. The potential of Pulisic is, of course, exciting for Chelsea fans but the American joins a club already boasting the likes of Eden Hazard, Willian, Pedro, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ross Barkley, Victor Moses and Callum Hudson-Odoi at the club, with Kenedy, Mason Mount, Charly Musonda and Izzy Brown all on loan elsewhere until the end of the campaign.
Sarri has made his stance very clear in which position he needs the club to improve on if they are to continue progressing this season.
Speaking to BBC Sport reporters after the match, he said: “I think we played a very good match for 80 metres of the pitch, then we were in trouble in the last 20 metres.
“We have to try to solve the problem of the last 15, 20 metres. The club knows very well my opinion. I think we need something different for characteristics.
“I’m not in charge of the market. I have to try to improve my players, my team, my offensive phase, or better my offensive phase in the last 20 metres.
“The club knows my position, my opinion. It’s up to the board.”
Pulisic is a good start, but an injured Olivier Giroud and an out-of-form Alvaro Morata are not good enough for a club still competing in various competitions both domestically and in Europe.
