Everton’s majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri has warned Marco Silva that Everton’s league position is ‘not good enough’.
After a run of just two wins in their last 10 Premier League games, the Toffees have slipped to 11th in the table and have fallen 11 points behind the Premier League’s top six.
Is Marco Silva already under pressure at Everton? Five key things to know…
- Following the departure of the much-maligned Sam Allardyce, Everton appointed Marco Silva as manager in the summer of 2018.
- So far, the Portuguese has overseen just seven wins from 21 Premier League games, with the club sitting 11th.
- The Toffees did, however, beat Lincoln City to progress into the fourth round of the FA Cup.
- At the club’s recent AGM, majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri admitted Everton’s league position is ‘not good enough’.
- The Iranian did, however, put his full backing behind Silva.
And, speaking at Everton’s general meeting on Tuesday, Moshiri outlined the seriousness of his project at Goodison Park, while stressing that he wants an improvement on the club’s current league standing.
“We are very serious about what we want to do,” he said. “I know, I am a fan myself. I look at the table and it is just not good enough, I think we know that. We need to go up the table.”
Some sections of Everton’s support have already begun voicing discontent at the club’s lack of progress this season; something that Moshiri wants to use to his advantage, despite calling for a little more patience from those fans.
He added: “We need to utilise the fans’ impatience to drive the club but we need to be patient for development.”
The Iranian billionaire also reassured Evertonians of his confidence in the completion of their planned stadium project on the Bramley Moore Dock site.
“We have a lot of experience so I think we will complete this stadium,” the former Arsenal shareholder said. “Be sure that will happen.
“And I will throw as much money as needed. Private markets will provide £350m, naming rights will give us some more and we will maybe have an equity gap of £100m.
“I think this club under the management of Marcel [Brands] and leadership of Denise [Barrett-Baxendale] is sufficiently robust to see the project through. It is no luxury, we have to get it done. If we want to have a big club we need a modern stadium and we will get it.”
Everton to stick with “big bet” Marco Silva
Despite admitting he would like to see an improvement on the club’s current league standing, Moshiri did offer his backing to manager Marco Silva, whom he said the club has put a ‘big bet’ on.
“We did our homework and we put a big bet on Marco and we stick with him,” he said. “He has our total support and we have a professional in Marcel Brands who monitors the progress.
“Consistency has been an issue but we have had some terrific performances and the challenge in the second half is to have more of those performances.
“The football management team are totally focused on it. We know what we are and I’m comfortable.”
Everton are at home to Bournemouth in their next game on Sunday.
