Dani Carvajal says that the Spanish national side’s style of play won’t change under new manager Luis Enrique.
Spain crashed out of the World Cup after losing 4-3 on penalties to hosts Russia in the last-16. Many have posited that Spain’s downfall was due to the disruption caused by Julen Lopetegui’s sacking, after the Spaniard agreed to manage Real Madrid following the tournament’s conclusion.
Enrique has since taken over the position from Fernando Hierro who was shipped in at the last minute prior to the start of the World Cup. And although the former Barcelona manager faces the daunting task of crafting a side capable of matching Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning team, his compatriot Carvajal is confident Spain’s attractive style of football will remain intact.
“Luis has come in and he has to decide if he wants to change the style, if he wants to keep it, or modify it,” said Carvajal (via Football Espana).
“However, with the players we have in Spain he can’t change it too much. We are players who like to have a lot of the ball, who like to move, and we are not a team that is going to play on the counter-attack. I don’t think you can modify too much a style that has worked for a lot of years.
“There are different tastes. For example, France won the World Cup playing differently. We are loyal to our ideology, with which we won two European Championships and a World Cup.
“In those tournaments it was necessary to have a bit of luck and I think that if against Russia the lottery of penalties would have gone our way, then you would have seen a very different Spain in the quarter-finals.”
Spain’s style
Spain might have to change their style as the tiki-taka possession football that made them so devastating in 2010 was lifted almost wholesale from the system that Pep Guardiola had devised at Barca.
This was made easy by the fact that Spain’s midfield trident was comprised of Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets; the same trident at Barcelona and three of the best midfielders to have ever played the game.
Iniesta and Xavi have now retired from international football however and Busquets is 30.
It remains to be seen whether Enrique makes serious adjustments to the Spanish nation team’s style for their upcoming fixtures.
Spain’s next match is in the UEFA Nations League against England on September 8.
