Sky pundit: This Palace player should get a medal if Liverpool win the league

Former Arsenal forward and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson joked that Crystal Palace ‘keeper Julián Speroni might get “a medal” if Liverpool win the league after his blunder handed the Reds the lead on Saturday.

In an eventful clash on Merseyside, the Eagles took the lead via Andros Townsend, Liverpool managed to level before the break and went ahead thanks to Roberto Firmino after eight minutes into the second half.

Palace equalised 10 minutes later and were looking like they could eke out a draw before Speroni botched a routine catch, flapping the ball back towards his goal allowing Mo Salah to secure a brace and take the lead for his side.

Salah probably won’t get an easier finish in his entire career, but his tap in makes him the fourth fastest player to score 50 Premier League goals – a feat achieved after 72 games.

Speroni will have a tough journey back to the capital, his error today is the fifth one he’s made that’s lead to a goal in the Premier League since the start of the 2014-15 season despite only playing 50 games; more than any other Crystal Palace player.

Commentating on Sky Sports, Merson joked that the 39-year-old’s mishap could be one of the deciding factors in Liverpool’s quest for for the Premier League title this season. “Speroni will probably get a medal for this if Liverpool win the league,” Said Merson.

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin was more sympathetic, saying on BBC Sport’s coverage: “It will go down as a mistake by Speroni but van Aanholt has a lot to answer for. He has got to go and attack the ball, and doesn’t follow Milner. Speroni has flapped it into his own net.”

Sadio Mane finished off Palace in injury time, but the Reds will be without James Milner for their next game as he got sent off for a bad foul on Wilfried Zaha, which is the second time he has been sent off for a challenge on the Ivorian.
