Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech should not be written off yet, according to former Gunners number one David Seaman.
Cech, 36, has been Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper since he made the switch across London from Chelsea for £10 million back in 2015.
Since then, he has made 117 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners, establishing himself as former manager Arsene Wenger’s go-to shot-stopper until the Frenchman’s departure at the end of last season.
Incoming manager Unai Emery has brought in Bernd Leno from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen for an undisclosed fee with the likelihood of using the German as Arsenal’s new first-choice goalkeeper heading into the new season.
Many have already written off Cech’s chances of continuing as Arsenal’s number one, however, former Gunners goalkeeper Seaman insists that it would be foolish to think the 36-year-old doesn’t have a chance of playing regular football at the Emirates.
Speaking to reporters (via Goal), Seaman said: “I don’t think [Cech] will get written off straight away.
“You don’t disregard that experience from a guy that has won everything in the Premier League and he has won the Champions League as well.”
Arsenal announced their squad numbers for the upcoming campaign, with Cech being handed the number one shirt, swapping from his original no.33 jersey.
“Don’t disregard that,” Seaman added.
“He has still got a lot to offer. What is interesting is that Petr has took the number one jersey. So that means that he wants to stay around for a little while.
“It is going to be difficult. I would imagine that one of [Cech or David Ospina] will leave.
“I am always cautious as to when a goalkeeper comes into the Premier League because it takes them a little while to get used to it.
“If you think back to David de Gea, he really struggled in his first season at Man United but he has really pushed on since then.
“So if Leno is the number one it will be interesting just to see how he adapts to the Premier League.”
Cech has also been spectacularly linked with a move back to Chelsea, with his former club almost certain to let Thibaut Courtois leave with just a year remaining on his contract.
