Klopp uses Oblak to defend Alisson to Liverpool fee

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says new boy Alisson was cheap in comparison to what they would have paid to acquire the services of Jan Oblak.

The 25-year-old Brazilian goalkeeper recently ended a two-year association with AS Roma by relocating to Anfield for an initial £56m – a record fee for a goalkeeper.

Klopp, though, doesn’t see it that way. Instead the German tactician believes it’s a bargain when you look around especially at Atletico Madrid’s shot-stopper Oblak with whom they were heavily linked.

“Everybody thinks it’s a lot of money. It is a lot of money, but he could’ve left for crazy money,” he told ESPN FC.

“The clause for Oblak for example is 100m euros (£89m), so nice!

“The goalkeeper market is different because it’s not each year that there is anybody available.

“We didn’t know exactly if Alisson is available or not, but from a specific moment we realised obviously he is available and that’s the moment when we decided we want to go for him.”

Alisson’s story

Since joining from boyhood club Internacional in 2016 the native of Novo Hamburgo bided his time before attaining Roma’s number one jersey.

Once in possession he never looked back, ultimately making 64 appearances across the last two seasons, and keeping 26 clean sheets in the process (40.6% success rate).

In those outings, Alisson would ship in 66 goals (one every 87 minutes) or 1.03 per game. His performances attracted the attention of many, but in the end, Liverpool won his signature, with him becoming the Reds fourth major arrival this summer following Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri.
