AC Milan deny holding talks with ex-Chelsea boss Antonio Conte

AC Milan’s new sporting director Leonardo has denied holding talks with Antonio Conte over potentially replacing Gennaro Gattuso in the San Siro dugout.

Gattuso signed a new three-year deal as Milan manager in April and subsequently led the Italian giants to a sixth-place finish in Serie A.

But Leonardo’s appointment led to rumours a change could be made, with recently-axed Conte emerging as a potential candidate to take over at Milan.

Conte was relieved of his duties by Chelsea earlier this month despite leading the Londoners to FA Cup glory in May.

His failure to qualify for the Champions League was believed to be the primary reason behind his exit, as was his constant criticism of the club’s transfer dealings, and Conte is yet to return to management with not long until the new season gets underway.

But Leonardo has denied making an approach for the former Juventus and Italy coach.

“My view is shared by the club, Gattuso was the first to be confirmed, this has never been up for discussion,” said Leonardo, according to Goal.

“It’s normal that these things happen when great coaches are available, but none of us have talked to Conte. Gattuso has grown as a coach, he’s a Milan man and we’ll go from there.”

Gattuso was appointed as Milan manager in 2017. His side will take part in next season’s Europa League after a ban from UEFA competitions was overturned.

The Italian is yet to win any major honours as a manager, while Conte has won three Scudettos, a Premier League title and an FA Cup.
