Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says one of his biggest goals is to make Jose Mourinho smile because it seldom happens.
The well-travelled Portuguese tactician has been outspoken about Manchester United’s transfer activity during their pre-season preparations which is a contrast to their arch-rivals.
Liverpool recently made Brazilian international Alisson the most expensive goalkeeper in history, leading to a backhanded compliment from Mourinho suggesting the Reds must now win silverware, but Klopp is not fazed.
“Yeah, for sure, a little bit but that’s okay,” he told Sky Sports News when asked if Mourinho was playing mind games.
“But I heard as well that Jose found me funny and one of my biggest goals in life is to make Jose smile! It doesn’t happen too often and if it happens because of Liverpool – well done!
“I said a few things [in the past]. I cannot really remember what I said but I know what I said about the Pogba transfer.”
“I would never talk about Manchester United unless somebody asks me about it but I am polite enough to give an answer if somebody asks me,” he added.
“That’s not always the smartest thing to do, and I have absolutely no problem with what Jose Mourinho is saying. It is a free world and he can say whatever he wants.
“If he is happy about our transfers even better, but we know that it does not mean you win automatically whatever.”
The awkward Guardiola-Klopp press conference exchange
Liverpool and United are currently preparing for the new season in the United States and will face each other in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Before their friendly showdown the Reds took on United’s neighbours and reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.
Klopp’s men came from behind to win 2-1 and there was an entertaining moment post-match between the respective managers.
Pep Guardiola was entertaining the press in a sanctioned news conference, before it was interrupted by Klopp, who the Spaniard invited to sit before leaving.
“Maybe Jose Mourinho will come and finish my press conference,” Klopp said as he sat down.
