Juventus say AC Milan defender Leonardo Bonucci wants to rejoin the club

AC Milan defender Leonardo Bonucci is seeking a return to Juventus after just 12 months at the San Siro according to new club general manager Leonardo.

Bonucci, 31, completed a sensational £37m move to the seven-time European Champions last summer, but the Italian skipper is now eager to return to Juventus after a season of unrest in Milan.

The experienced centre-back won six consecutive Serie A titles with Juve during a highly successful period with the club, and with the Rossoneri failing to qualify for Champions League football, Bonucci wants to rekindle his former romance in Turin.

Milan were recently taken over by hedge fund Elliot Management, after the club’s former owner Li Yonghong failed to repay a large debt, and under new ownership, former Brazil forward Leonardo has been appointed the new general manager.

During a press conference, Leonardo confirmed the speculation linking Bonucci with a return to his former club, admitting he will not stand in the player’s way if he wants to leave.

“I’ve met some people, not just those from Juventus,” the 1994 World Cup winner told reporters, via Goal.

“We’re bound to FFP, so it won’t be a crazy market. It’ll be moderate and wise. The desire [to talk to Juve] started with Leonardo Bonucci, so if we can, we’ll make it happen. We have no objection to it.”

Despite confessing that Bonucci was keen to part ways with Gennaro Gattuso’s side, he hinted that the defender could yet stay for another season.

He added: “It all started from an idea, a very sensible and quiet one. It’s from here that all the talk started.

“It’s very normal for a player to have a wish. A player doesn’t just ask to leave, there’s also the project and objectives to consider.

“He arrived last year as a symbol for change. In great harmony, we’ll try to see what will happen. It’s not definite that he’ll leave.”

Since moving to the San Siro, Bonucci has featured in 51 matches across all competitions as the club finished last term in sixth-place in Serie A, and reached the Coppa Italia final, though Juventus triumphed on the day. Gattuso’s men also crashed out of the Europa League in the Round of 16 after a 5-1 mauling from Arsenal.
