Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has confirmed winger Alex Iwobi is set to sign a new deal at the club amid doubts surrounding his future.
Iwobi currently has two years remaining on his contract with the Gunners but has been linked with a move away from the club following the departure of Arsene Wenger.
The Nigerian international was a regular feature for Arsenal last season without truly impressing, scoring three goals in 26 Premier League appearances.
But, according to Arsenal head coach Emery, the 22-year-old is close to signing a new deal.
“I have the information – he’s near,” he said (via Goal).
“First, I want to work with every player, and they are coming.
“Mesut [Ozil], Iwobi, [Mohamed] Elneny are starting to work with us, the first week is very good. My information is he is going to sign and continue with us.”
Iwobi only recently joined up with the Arsenal squad following his exploits with Nigeria at the World Cup but started in the Gunners’ 5-1 win over PSG in Singapore on Saturday before being taken off at half-time.
Iwobi’s Arsenal career so far
Joining Arsenal as a youngster and coming through the ranks of their academy, Iwobi made his first-team debut for the club in October 2015, starting in a League Cup defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.
Since then, the Nigerian has gone on to make 98 appearances for the Gunners across all competitions, scoring nine goals and recording 18 assists.
Iwobi has also won the FA Cup once and has two Community Shield winners medals.
