How Joe Gomez has influenced Liverpool’s transfer plans

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said he has no intention of signing another centre-back and pointed towards Joe Gomez’s performances in preseason to justify his view.

Liverpool have already spent over £170m on four new arrivals this summer including a record sum for Brazilian ‘keeper Alisson.

The Reds already bolstered their defence last January when they brought in Vigil van Dijk from Southampton for £75m, a world-record fee for a defender.

And asked about the prospect of further reinforcing his defensive options, Klopp told the Echo: “Do you think we have to? This summer? No, I am happy with our players, to be honest, so I don’t see the need.

“When you see Joe Gomez playing in that role tonight as a central defender, he combines a lot of things you don’t find in the transfer market, to be honest.

“I can’t see in the moment the need, but there are 12 days to go and a lot of things can happen.

“You ask me now and I say no, but maybe if you ask me tomorrow I will say something different.”

Liverpool’s transfer window

Liverpool will potentially be playing with their most formidable squad of the Premier League era when they open their campaign on August 12.

As well as retaining their terrifying attacking trident, comprised of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Golden Boot winner Mohamed Salah, they have acquired players that will lend a real balance to their midfield.

Recently arrived Fabinho is comfortable on the ball, is an excellent passer and provides excellent coverage in front of the defence.

Meanwhile another new arrival, Naby keita, is a box-to-box midfielder, whom is also comfortable in possession, capable of making goals as well as scoring them and has drawn comparisons with recent World Cup champion N’Golo Kante.

Xherdan Shaqiri meanwhile will add further competion in attack.

Liverpool’s first game of the upcoming Premier League season is against West Ham United at Anfield on August 12.
