Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says the way Xherdan Shaqiri has adapted so well to life in a Red shirt is “not normal” after only being at the club for four days.
The 26-year-old Switzerland international arrived at Liverpool from recently relegated Stoke City for £13.23m as part of Klopp’s £163m squad revamp.
Shaqiri scored on his debut for the Reds in a pre-season friendly against Manchester United. His goal in the 82nd minute was a stunning bicycle kick that capped of his side’s 4-1 rout of their long-time rivals.
Following the game Klopp was delighted with Shaqiri’s performance and appeared to be surprised by how well the Swiss winger has settled in with the Reds.
“That’s not normal after four days in the club – adapting that well to the style of play,” Klopp told Sky Sports.
“We wanted to help him a little bit with the position so that it’s not too complicated, gave him a lot of freedom, offensively playing natural, plus offering runs in behind, which is what he did, especially around the Sturridge goal.
“For Shaq, in the moment he signed he wanted to stay immediately at Liverpool and train with us. I think it was a week after he finished the World Cup, so I said: ‘No, no, no. Go!’
“He came back a few days ago and he was really excited. For him it was a very good moment in his career, having already had a real experience at Bayern, at Stoke, at Inter.
“Those were important moments in his career and now we have him and he can now play together with a few really nice football players.”
Watch: Shaqiri’s debut stunner from every angle
Shaqiri put the icing on the cake at the end of a Liverpool’s 4-1 victory over Manchester United at the Michigan Stadium on Saturday night with a superb bicycle kick finish.
Although the goal was undoubtedly impressive, it was handed to the winger by some lackadaisical United defending. When Ben Woodburn’s chipped cross dropped into the penalty area 19-year-old Ro-Shaun Williams found himself completely out of position, while Eric Bailly and Andreas Pereira were caught ball-watching as the Swiss winger sprang up to acrobatically put the final nail in the Red Devils’ coffin.
