Neymar says he’s a new man after taking on board the criticism of his behaviour at this summer’s World Cup.
The 26-year-old Brazilian international was heavily condemned for continually going to ground and feigning injury in Russia.
It led to widespread mockery of the Paris Saint-Germain forward, which hasn’t gone unnoticed, and whilst admitting to overreacting in an advert published by Gillette, the former Barca player attempts to explain why.
“Sometimes I overreact, but the truth is I suffer on the pitch,” he said.
“I have studs go onto my shins, I have been kicked in the back, my feet have been stood upon… sometimes it is not easy to deal with my frustrations.
“There is still a boy inside me and at times it amazes the world but in others it annoys people, but I must learn to keep this boy alive just inside me and not on the pitch.
“If people say I fall over too much the truth is I have fallen apart and that is more painful than someone stepping on an operated ankle.
“I am here with an open heart and after accepting criticism and evaluating myself, I am a new man.
“I may have fallen but now I have gotten back up and now that I have, the entire nation will get up with me.”
The world’s most expensive footballer
A graduate of Santos’ academy Neymar, after much speculation as well as bagging 136 goals across 223 matches for his boyhood club, joined Barcelona in the summer of 2013.
He would go on to make no fewer than 186 appearances for the Catalan giants, winning two league titles and the 2015 European Cup, whilst registering 105 goals and 77 assists in the process.
Last summer Neymar became the world’s most expensive footballer when he swapped the Camp Nou for Paris Saint-Germain, after the Ligue 1 powerhouse activated his £198 million buyout clause.
So far, he’s managed 28 goals and 16 assists in 30 matches, though his first season was cut short following a serious ankle injury he sustained midway through.
PSG’s next game is against Monaco in the Trophee des Champions on August 4.
