Barcelona grant Lucas Digne permission to talk to other clubs amid Everton links

Lucas Digne has been given permission to leave Barcelona’s pre-season training camp to finalise his move away from the club, as confirmed by the club’s official Twitter page.

Digne, 25, joined Barcelona in 2016 after a strong loan spell at AS Roma the year before.

However, the left-back has struggled to make his mark in the first-team, making just 29 league appearances in two seasons and playing second-fiddle to Jordi Alba.

And now Digne looks set to leave the Catalan club amid heavy reports linking him with a £22m move to Everton.

A short statement on the Barcelona’s official Twitter page read: “Lucas Digne travels today to Barcelona with the Club’s permission to finalise his departure from the Club.”

Everton’s defensive woes

Before pre-season, there was a great deal of optimism among Evertonians – Sam Allardyce had left the club, a large reshuffle at the club saw Marcel Brands come in as director of football to team up with the new manager, Marco Silva, and Everton’s owner, Farhad Moshiri, was promising to splash the cash in the transfer market.

However, their preparations for the new season haven’t gone quite as planned.

Despite an astounding 22-0 win over Austrian minnows, ATV Irdning in their first friendly, Everton have failed to win since – their last two results have been a 3-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers and a 4-1 defeat to Rennes.

This points to an obvious deficiency in defence and, with Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka both advancing well into their 30’s, Lucas Digne will definitely add some much-needed youth and quality to the Toffees back-line.
