Manchester United full-back Matteo Darmian has confirmed he wants to leave the club for more regular football.
Darmian only made eight appearances in the Premier League last season – including just five starts – as well as 17 across all competitions.
And the right-back says he now wants to leave the club for the opportunity to play more regular football.
“I want to play more regularly. Last season, I didn’t play much, that’s my objective and my ambition,” Darmian told the Independent.
“That’s why I spoke with the manager and also with the club about my future. I want to leave but we will see what happens because we don’t know.”
Darmian was quizzed on whether Serie A was his likeliest destination should he leave before the transfer window closes on August 9.
“It’s an option. Yes, probably. We will see what happens. Honestly, I’m waiting. If I stay, I stay and I do what I did up until now.
“If I go, it is because the offer that another team makes will be good.”
United manager Jose Mourinho has also previously stated that he is comfortable with Darmian leaving the club.
“Matteo wants to leave and I think when a player wants to leave, if the right offer arrives you have to try to be human and let the player follow his instinct but not at any price,” Mourinho said, via Sky Sports.
“Until now, the offers we got for Matteo are not even close to being accepted.
“If Matteo leaves he leaves because the right offer arrives and if he stays, yes you are right, he can be important for us.”
With Darmian set to leave the club, United could be without a right-back when they take on Leicester City in their first game of the new Premier League season, as Antonio Valencia and newcomer Diogo Dalot are both injured.
However, this could be the opportunity that youngster Axel Tuanzebe needs to break into the first team.
Tuanzebe has impressed Mourinho in the past, his performance on debut against Wigan Athletic caused Mourinho to remark: “ten minutes is enough to see the potential.”
If Darmian leaves it could also mean three of the players signed by Louis van Gaal will have left the club during the summer, with Daley Blind recently re-signing for Ajax and Anthony Martial also linked with a move away.
Manchester United take on Liverpool on Saturday in the penultimate game of their pre-season friendlies before hosting Leicester City at Old Trafford to kick off their Premier League campaign on August 10.
