Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino says that his players need more rest ahead of the 2018/19 Premier League season.
Spurs had a number of key players on international duty for the World Cup finals, and they will have had three weeks to recuperate before their first game of the season. However, Pochettino does not think that this is enough time for his players.
“The players need to rest, the players need a period to recover after more than 10 months competition,” Pochettino, told reporters, via the Mail, after his side thrashed Roma 4-1 in a pre-season game in California.
“I’m not going to complain about them having that. I completely understand that they need 20/21 days to be away from football.
“But of course that is a massive disadvantage because to prepare the season in that way will be tough for them and us. I need to adapt what the Premier League propose.”
The Argentine, however, expects that other clubs in the Premier League will be facing a similar problem to him, and he seems to have come to terms with the situation.
He added: “We cannot delay the start of the season. We start earlier than other leagues and countries. There’s nothing I can do.
“I think all the clubs are going to be in a similar condition. Some teams with more problems than others. That is the reality and we cannot change it.”
Tottenham play Barcelona in their penultimate International Champions Cup fixture on Sunday before finishing their preparations against A.C Milan.
Spurs’ next competitive game will be at St James’ Park against Newcastle United in the Premier League on 11 August.
