Mourinho reveals expectations over his five-strong Man Utd transfer wishlist

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he only expects to sign at least one player from his five transfer targets this summer.

United have been linked with several high-profile names throughout the summer window, but Mourinho seems to be focused on strengthening his central defence.

Leicester City’s Harry Maguire has been linked with club as well as Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng, Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar.

“I would like two more players. I don’t think I’m going to have two,” Mourinho told reporters (via the BBC) during a typically fractious press conference following United’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of Liverpool in a pre-season friendly.

“I think it’s possible I’m going to have one,” Mourinho continued. “I gave my club a list of five names a few months ago. I wait to see if it’s possible to have one of these players.”

Man Utd’s defensive pursuit

United have had an uneventful transfer window compared to recent years with the only notable signing being Brazilian defensive midfielder, Fred, who arrived from Shakhtar Donetsk for a reported £52 million earlier in the summer.

It has been reported that Mourinho was presented with several high-profile names by United chairman Ed Woodward over this summer’s window.

Those names included Paris Saint-Germain forwards Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, as well Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale who intimated his desire to leave Los Blancos in the immediate aftermath of last season’s Champions League final.

Mourinho reportedly turned those names down in favour of his own targets, which seem to be prioritising defensive reinforcements. United conceded the second fewest goals last season in the Premier League, but the Reds have faced difficulties in central defence, having changed their defensive partnerships 11 times throughout last season.

United face Real Madrid on August 1 in the last game of their pre-season tour in the United States before hosting Leicester City in their opening game of the new Premier League season on August 10.
