Mauricio Pochettino seeking Spurs “glory” despite his apparent U-turn on the transfer window change

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino says his team will be “playing for the glory” regardless of whether the club signs any new players this summer.

Spurs are yet to make a signing in the current window, which is due to shut in just over a week on August 9, two days before Tottenham’s Premier League campaign kicks off with a trip to Newcastle United.

The Londoners have been linked with moves for Jack Grealish, Wilfried Zaha and Anthony Martial, while the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembele are said to be on their way out – the Belgians are yet to return after reaching the World Cup semi-finals in Russia.

And Pochettino is unsure whether Spurs will be making any additions before the deadline.

“I don’t know if we are going to sign or not. We’re working on that. I cannot tell you if we’re going to sign one, zero or two or three or four,” he said at a press conference during the club’s pre-season tour of the US, according to Sky Sports.

“We’re working. It’s true that it’s so close, the transfer window is so close, but the club’s doing everything to help the team and add some players, more quality, and try to help us in the season to achieve what we want.”

Pochettino’s U-turn

The Argentinian went on to hint that the current squad being motivated is more important than the prospect of bringing in new recruits, before criticising the transfer window’s new closing date.

“Of course we need to feel from the World Cup players that motivation, internal motivation to come back and want to keep going,” Pochettino added. “Playing for the glory and trying to help the team to try to win. That is the most important thing.

“If you compare with Europe I think you are at a complete disadvantage and sure it does not help the clubs in the Premier League.

“We are all in the same situation in England. It’s clear that today I don’t know if the rest of the teams are happy with that decision.”

Pochettino continued: “Personally I think it’s not right. In that situation I think it didn’t help or it’s not going to help the Premier League clubs or the clubs in England to have the same possibility as another contender, because we are going to compete in the Champions League and to have 20 days less is I think not a thing that is going to help you.”

It seems Pochettino has performed a U-turn on earlier comments he made about the new transfer deadline. Back in April, he backed the change and claimed it is a good thing for Tottenham.

“It’s a massive advantage for us for [the transfer window] to finish before the start of the season,” he said, according to ESPN. “For us, it’s massive. It’s fantastic because now it’s before the start of the season – not one month later.

“Of course, for many clubs, it will not change too much, but for us, it is going to change a lot. We’re going to have the squad ready before the start of the season. If we want new players, they need to arrive before the start of the season.”
