Former Manchester City and Southampton striker Bradley Wright-Phillips has broken an MLS record after netting 100 goals for New York Red Bulls.
Wright-Phillips, 33, became the fastest player in Major League Soccer history to reach a century of goals after scoring the winner against DC United on Wednesday.
The Lewisham-born forward reached the milestone during his 159th match for the Metros after firing home against Wayne Rooney’s new club, and the ex-Man City man provided the only goal of the match at the Audi Field.
Upon netting with just two minutes on the clock, the veteran forward uplifted his shirt to reveal another strip with the number 100 embroidered across the back.
By reaching the landmark, Wright-Phillips has become only the 11th player in top-flight United States football to bag a century of league goals.
The former England U20 international revealed his delight on social media, Tweeting his gratitude to close relatives and New York Red Bulls personnel for helping break the record.
He wrote: “You don’t score 100 league goals without great team-mates, past and present, top-class coaching staff and a supportive family so I want to thank you all.”
Victory for the New York-based club kept them third in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer, while DC United sit rock-bottom in 11th.
