Why Lucas Hernandez has changed to No.21 for Atletico Madrid

France defender Lucas Hernandez has a new Atlético Madrid squad number following his World Cup success this summer.

The 22-year-old left-back, who only made his Les Bleus debut in March, was an ever-present as Didier Deschamps’ men secured a second world title.

Hernandez across those seven appearances wore No.21 and he’s taken to that number by ending a three-season association with ’19’, which has exclusively adorned his Atleti kit since the 2015/16 season.

But that is not the only change; the Marseillan will have ‘L. HERNANDEZ’ printed on the back of his jersey, again how it was while representing the France in Russia.

Other squad number changes

Hernández isn’t alone. Diego Costa who returned to Atlético last season will don his familiar ’19’ which has, as explained, been vacated by the aforementioned Hernández.

Thomas Lemar, the club’s big summer acquisition from Monaco who was also present in Russia with France, inherits the No.11 jersey last worn by Ángel Correa who from next season wears number 10.

Atleti next take on Inter in the International Champions Cup on August 11, before taking part in the UEFA Super Cup final on August 15 against Real Madrid.

The capital club then open up their La Liga account on August 20 against Valencia.
