Liverpool took the Premier League bragging rights on Saturday evening as they beat Manchester United 4-1 in Michigan.
The Reds dominated the opening stages of the match and were duly rewarded just before the half-hour mark as Sadio Mane converted a penalty. But their lead lasted just minutes with Andreas Pereira equalising from a free-kick.
Daniel Sturridge then continued his good pre-season by restoring Liverpool’s lead after half-time before Sheyi Ojo made it three from the spot.
And Xherdan Shaqiri put the icing on the cake with an overhead kick with 10 minutes remaining.
Here’s how the players from both sides rated.
Manchester United
Lee Grant – 6 – Great save to deny Salah’s smart header inside 10 minutes, tipping the ball over the bar as it looked to be looping into the back of the net. Could do nothing to stop Mane’s penalty despite going the right way.
Matteo Darmian – 4 – Had a fairly uneventful game, not doing much in his real chance to shine given the club’s problems at right-back.
Timothy Fosu-Mensah – 5 – The youngster had a good first half alongside Bailly, keeping Solanke quiet and doing well to limit the effect of Mane and Salah on most occasions. But fell alongside United in the second half.
Eric Bailly – 5 – A late addition into the starting XI, replacing Chris Smalling, Bailly was stern in defence and helped marshal Liverpool’s attacking options before the collapse.
Axel Tuanzebe – 4 – Tasked with keeping Mohamed Salah quiet in the first half, the youngster struggled a quite bit with the forward.
Demetri Mitchell – 4 – Needed to double up with Tuanzebe to deal with Salah but did not have a good start. Conceded the penalty on Salah after a mistimed clearance saw him upend the Egyptian.
Scott McTominay – 4 – A quiet game throughout for Mourinho’s favourite youngster as the match went past the United midfield.
Ander Herrera – 4 – Captain in Michigan, he denied a certain goal for van Dijk with a well-timed headed clearance off the line but that was his highlight. Conceded a second-half penalty for a sloppy foul.
Andreas Pereira – 6 – Had a quiet start to the game but beautifully equalised with a free-kick which went straight into the top left corner.
Juan Mata – 5 – One of United’s attacking options Mata made a number of right runs but his timing was often off, seeing two first half goals disallowed for offside.
Alexis Sanchez – 5 – Cut a frustrated figure in the first half, as he was the constant target of some not-so-friendly tackles. Was not on same wavelength as forward teammates throughout the match.
A tight opening to the second half, as @Alexis_Sanchez continues to spearhead our attack – we're now past the hour mark. ⏱️ #MUFC #MUTOUR #ICC2018 pic.twitter.com/OVxDDLpSAV

Substitutes:
Joel Pereira (for Grant 45) – 4 – Beaten by Sturridge shot which took a couple of deflections and left rooted to the spot for Ojo’s penalty.
Tahith Chong (for Mitchell 71) – 5 – Did well after coming on despite the game being away from United.
Fred (for Mata 71) – 5 – Not the debut he would have wanted as Liverpool controlled the show.
Ro-Shaun William (for Tuanzebe 81) – N/A – A late sub.
Angel Gomes (for Sanchez 81) – N/A – A late sub.
Joshua Bohui (for Herrera 81) – N/A – A late sub.
Liverpool
Kamil Grabara – 5 – Had very little to do in the first half except picking the ball out of his net three times (though only one counted) and showing his footwork. Could do nothing to stop Pereira’s stunning free-kick.
Rafael Camacho – 8 – A very strong game from the youngster having a lot of success getting forward and looked assured at the back.
Ragnar Klavan – 4 – The weaker of Liverpool’s two first-half centre-backs. Would have received at least one yellow card for fouls were this a competitive fixture.
Virgil van Dijk – 8 – An almost flawless game saw van Dijk make dealing with long balls look like child’s play. But needlessly gave away the free-kick which resulted in United’s equaliser.
Alberto Moreno – 5 – Good defending early to to deny Manchester United a break. Pushed forward a lot with United pinned back.
Fabinho – 4 – The new signing had a quiet start in midfield and did not look up to the pace at times. Booked for a cynical foul on Sanchez
Adam Lallana – 6 – Once again Lallana looked like a man with a point to prove, driving at the United defence and linking up well with Liverpool’s attacking players.
James Milner – 5 – Had a fairly quiet game but tested United’s defence with some long passes in both halves.
Mohamed Salah – 6 – Had a good chance to give Liverpool the lead inside 10 minutes, but his smart header was saved well. Was brought down for the penalty, getting himself in front of Mitchell well.
Sadio Mane – 7 – Liverpool’s creative danger in the first half, linking up with Salah well. Opened the scoring with a cool penalty.
Dominic Solanke – 4 – Looked in his 65 minutes on the pitch, having little effect on the game.
Substitutes:
Caoimhin Kelleher (for Grabara 45) – 5 – Had very little, if anything at all, to do coming on at half-time.
Xherdan Shaqiri(for Salah 45) – 8 – Caused United’s defence problems and used his strength to hold Bailly off well to set up Sturridge’s goal. Put the game to bed with a spectacular overhead kick.

Nathaniel Phillips (for Klavan 45) – 6 – Looked composed at the back after coming on, first alongside van Dijk and then Gomez.
Sheyi Ojo (for Mane 45) – 7 – Tested the United defence after coming on. Took the penalty off Sturridge in the second half and put it away calmly under pressure.
Ben Woodburn (for Lallana 45) – 6 – Looked assured in the second half with Liverpool’s influence growing, without doing anything too great.
Joe Gomez (for van Dijk 65) – 6 – Did well with the task at hand in the second half as Liverpool looked comfortable.
Daniel Sturridge (for Solanke 65) – 7 – Scored with his first touch having come on in the second half, slotting the ball well via minor deflections.

Marko Grujic (for Milner 65) – 6 – Helped control the midfield after coming on but nothing to set him out above the rest.
Andrew Robertson(for Moreno 65) – 6 – Brought on for Moreno in the second half, the Scot one a penalty after drawing a foul from Herrera.
Curtis Jones (for Fabinho 65) – 6 – Had very little to do after coming on with Liverpool’s control growing.
Pedro Chirivella (for Camacho 65) – 6 – Like many of Liverpool’s second-half substitutes, helped to control the game without setting the world alight.
