How will Roma line up in 2018/19? XIs based on new signings in Serie A club’s transfer market

It has been a summer of upheaval at AS Roma with some big departures and some equally big arrivals.

The Giallorossi finished third last season behind Napoli and champions Juventus but in reality were miles away from competing with either. This season all the headlines have surrounded Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Turin but Roma have quietly gone about their business signing a dozen new players.

They have some pretty big holes to fill with goalkeeper Alisson headed to the Premier League with Liverpool and tenacious midfielder Radja Nainggolan travelling north to join Inter but they have made some marquee additions of their own.

Javier Pastore has signed from Paris Saint Germain, Justin Kluivert arrives from Ajax and the ever impressive Bryan Cristante joins from Atalanta.

With that in mind here are three ways the capital club could line-up for 2018/19:

There will be some new additions to the squad before the window shuts but even if Roma didn’t sign a single player before then they would still be able to put out one of the strongest line-ups in Serie A.

The hole left by Alisson would be well repaired by the presence of veteran ‘keeper Antonio Mirante who signed from Bologna this summer. The stopper who was a key player at Parma before their financial implosion in 2015 has been the first name on the team-sheet at Bologna over the last three seasons making 87 appearances.

In front of him would be imposing centre-back pairing of Kostas Manolas and Federico Fazio who showed their ability when Roma shocked Barcelona at the Olympico last season during their famous Champions League comeback. They would be ably flanked by left-back Aleksandar Kolarov and right-back Alessandro Florenzi.

In the middle, captain fantastic Daniele De Rossi would anchor the back-line next to Bryan Cristante whose energy and ability on the ball would drive the team forward in transition.

The attacking options available to the Giallorossi this season are enough to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. The man that will get fans salivating the most is Javier Pastore who will be the key creative force in the centre, dropping into the spaces and making the most of the team’s quality in wide areas.

On the right flank, last season’s seven-goal man Stephan El Shaarawy would support Bosnian star Edin Dzeko who would have Diego Perotti to call upon on the left.

If all the transfer business the Giallorossi are linked with goes through then there will almost certainly be a nice conundrum for Eusebio Di Francesco to solve when it comes to who plays where.

The first change could see Sweden international ‘keeper Robin Olsen arrive from Copenhagen after starring at the World Cup.

The goalkeeper would be a more than adequate replacement for the departing Alisson and would offer experience and a cool head between the sticks.

The back-line would see smart free transfer Ivan Marcano slot in the left-sided centre-back role, offering a more reliable option than Juan Jesus whilst also maintaining the perfect left-foot-right-foot balance.

The middle of the park would see fit again Kevin Strootman partner the attacking-minded Cristante, giving more energy in the centre and they would play behind three of the most exciting players in Serie A.

On the left Justin Kluivert, a man with the world at his feet, would make runs cutting inside for Javier Pastore to pick out; on the right would be the man all Roma fans are now praying for….Malcom.

The Brazilian attacking midfielder looks likely to leave Bordeaux this summer and was attracting interest from Premier League clubs like Everton and Leicester. However, with the money earned from Alisson’s sale, Roma are now firm favourites for his signature.

He was the undoubted star of the French side last season leading them in goals (12) and assists (7) while contributing to more than 34% of all the goals Bordeaux scored in Ligue 1.

Roma line-up 2018/19 No. 3: The next generation

As if their current first team wasn’t good enough, Roma also boast some of the best up-and-coming youngsters in European football. If they chose a line-up looking at giving youth a chance it would look a bit like this.

Between the sticks would be Brazilian stopper Daniel Fuzato who signed from Palmeiras and he would be protected by a back-line consisting of Kostas Manolas offering his experience to new signing Willaim Bianda. The highly thought of Frenchman joined from RC Lens and, at 18-years-old, is expected to have a bright future.

At right back 23-year-old Dutchman Rick Karsdorb would offer intelligent forward thrust and defensive ability that made him Feyenoord’s record sale when he was signed by Roma last summer for €14m plus add-ons.

At left back would be 19-year-old Luca Pellegrini would get the chance to turn out for his boyhood club, although could face competition from 22-year-old La Masia graduate Moustapha Seck.

In the centre of the park, Bryan Cristante would be the man of experience; even at the age of 23, the former Atalanta midfield has over 100 senior appearances to his name. He would support the increasingly impressive Italian international Lorenzo Pellegrini who at 22-years-old is already looking like a future star at both club and international level.

On the left wing 18-year-old (yes you read that right!) Justin Kluivert would offer star quality with 21-year-old Croatian Ante Coric, the latest starlet to come off the impressive Dinamo Zagreb production line, in the centre. On the right, Cengiz Under, a player that began to show just how good he could be at the end of last season, would offer a dangerous and tricky attacking outlet.

Leading the line, Patrik Schick would offer the class of a striker who bagged 11 goals in 32 Serie A appearances while with Sampdoria in 2016/17 and at just 22-years-old he will certainly be to improve on this in the coming campaign.

Should Malcom arrive, then the Brazilian could replace either Coric or Under in the side. However, a fluid front three of Kluivert, Under and Malcom at the expense of Schick could also be an exciting system to develop.
