Neymar has admitted that he has a “special affection” for Paris Saint-Germain teammate Kylian Mbappe, stating that he wants to take the Frenchman “under his wing”.
The Brazilian had a mixed World Cup campaign this summer in Russia as Brazil were knocked out in the quarter-finals against Belgium.
The 26-year-old scored two goals for his country, making him the fourth-highest goalscorer in Brazilian history, behind legendary forwards Pele, Ronaldo and Romario, in first, second and third respectively.
In contrast, Mbappe impressed as France went on to claim the World Cup title, ending a 20-year wait to get their hands on the trophy once again.
Mbappe became only the second teenager to score in a World Cup final – the other was Pele – as France defeated Croatia 4-2 in Moscow to cap a fine tournament for the Frenchman.
Upon France winning the World Cup, Neymar admitted that he congratulated the youngster on his efforts this summer and offered his services to guide Mbappe as he continues to learn his trade as a professional footballer.
“I congratulated him, of course,” Neymar told reporters via Goal.
“We talked during the World Cup, always, and we tried to meet in the semi-finals but unfortunately it wasn’t possible.
“But I was happy for him. He’s a boy that I have special affection for, he’s a boy that I try to pass on my experience [to], even at my young age, to help him become better and better.”
PSG play Arsenal next Saturday in the International Champions Cup.
