Maurizio Sarri discusses Chelsea transfer plans amid Gary Cahill Man Utd links

New Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has identified central midfield as an area in which the club can improve while addressing the future of club captain Gary Cahill.

Meeting the media for the first time since his appointment last week Sarri was, as expected, asked a series of questions about what he hopes to achieve in English football while with the Stamford Bridge outfit.

The Tuscany native is known for his tactical nous and a style of play that requires players of high levels in terms of technical quality. The former Napoli coach knows he cannot change the entire group at Chelsea but, despite bringing £57m Jorginho over with him from Napoli, he has identified central midfield as a key area to improve during the current transfer window.

Sarri, who oversaw a Napoli team that gained the most points of any Serie A runners-up in history (91), would not reveal who his specific targets were but is hoping he can bring in a player that will be suited to his system.

“I cannot name names, because I don’t know,” said Sarri at a press conference hosted on Wednesday afternoon.

“I spoke with the club and ideally I think that a pinch of quality is lacking in central midfield for a certain type of play.

“At the end of the transfers (window) I will understand which type of game is the most suitable.

“I cannot change 20 players, I must adapt and then I will see if we change something in my game. Because of their characteristics.”

Sarri will be looking to get Chelsea back  on track after a lacklustre campaign in 2017/18 that saw the Blues finish fifth.

He revealed that he hopes to bring something new to the club by imposing his style on the pitch rather than trying to make wholesale changes to the club’s philosophy: “I do not want to change anything in the club’s philosophy, but I want to bring mine on the pitch.

“I always start from something. It is fun, the child in each of us must be nurtured as this sometimes makes the best of us.

“The style of play that is fun, it’s the first thing.”

Gary Cahill still wanted by Sarri despite Man Utd transfer links

The Premier League has rules about the number of homegrown players each club needs to include in their squad something that Sarri is aware of and will embrace.

When asked about using English players in his set-up, Sarri was clear that this is something he will consider: “Well a number of English players is imposed so there will be some.

“I don’t want to make this distinction, I am not bothered about nationality. They are not young or old.”

London regional the Evening Standard reported this week that Cahill is considering his future at the club amid suggestions Juventus defender Daniele Rugani will be signed. This has seen top-six rivals Manchester United listed as bookmaker Betfair’s favourites to become the former Bolton stopper’s next club, at 5/4.

Sarri added: “Gary Cahill can still give us a lot. In keeping the English players, something must be left.

“Juventus had the most Italians and it led to good results. We should respect a very long tradition.”

Sarri have to wait for a number of his players to get back from World Cup duty before he can make a full assessment but with Chelsea kick-starting their campaign away at Huddersfield Town on August 11, he will want to get going.
