France defender Raphael Varane has likened international teammate and promising forward Kylian Mbappe to former Brazil striker Ronaldo.
Both Varane and Mbappe are currently heavily involved in France’s efforts at the World Cup this summer in Russia, with their performances – particularly Mbappe’s – drawing praise within the football community.
Mbappe scored twice, won a penalty and provided a world-class performance in France’s 4-3 Round of 16 victory over Argentina, with the French progressing to the quarter-finals as one of the favourites to lift the trophy.
Real Madrid centre-back Varane has heaped praise upon the young attacker, citing the similarities between Mbappe’s style of play and that of world-renowned forward Ronaldo.
“Kylian has a lot of talent, speed and goals, but he’s still very young,” he told reporters via Marca.
“He has qualities similar to Ronaldo, the Brazilian, but he’s also something different, he likes dribbling, he’s learning and we’re happy to have a player like him.”
To date, Mbappe has scored seven goals in 19 matches for his country, with the 19-year-old having plenty of time to build upon those already impressive numbers.
In contrast, Brazilian legend Ronaldo scored 62 goals in 98 games for the South American nation whilst also winning the World Cup in 2002 – where he further clinched the golden boot with eight goals – ensuring that he will always be remembered as one of the greatest international goalscorers of all time.
France face Uruguay in the quarter-finals of the World Cup on Friday at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.
