Promising forward Stephy Mavididi joins Juventus from Arsenal

England U20 international, Stephy Mavididi, has joined Italian giants Juventus from Arsenal.

Mavididi, 20, has had promising spells out on loan at Preston North End and Charlton Athletic in recent years, as well as scoring three goals in three appearances for the England U20 side.

He joins Juventus on a permanent basis and will initially join their ‘B’ team to continue his development.

Arsenal have wished Mavididi well for the future, with a statement on the club’s official website reading: “Stephy Mavididi has signed for Juventus on a permanent transfer. The 20-year-old forward will initially join the Italian side’s ‘B’ team.

“Stephy has previously spent time on loan at Preston North End, and also had two spells at Charlton Athletic, where he spent the second half of last season.

“He is an England youth international having played up to under-20 level.

“We would like to thank Stephy for his contribution to the club and wish him well for the future.”

Flying the nest

Mavididi’s departure is the latest in a succession of Arsenal youngsters to have impressed at development level and then leave the club to further enhance their talents.

In the 2016/17 season, talented German winger Serge Gnabry moved to Werder Bremen and went on to score 11 goals in 27 games – he has since sealed a move to Bayern Munich and has two caps for the German national team.

The move set a trend which has seen Kaylen Hinds (to Wolfsburg), Chris Willock (to Benfica) and Jeff Reine-Adélaïde (to Angers) all move abroad to develop their fledgling careers.

One player who has also moved abroad recently, but may regret not doing it sooner, is forward, Chuba Akpom. Akpom scored 33 goals in 50 games for Arsenal at U23 level but found his chances in the first-team restricted.

The forward only managed 12 appearances in four years at senior level for the Gunners, failing to score a single goal, and had six loan spells away from the Emirates in five years – he sealed a permanent move to PAOK in Greece this summer.
