Stan Collymore has urged Arsenal to sell Mesut Ozil, brandishing the German as a “luxury” player Unai Emery doesn’t need in his squad.
Ozil was absent for Arsenal’s 3-1 win over West Ham United on Saturday, and, following the game, Emery was forced to deny he had been involved in a training ground spat with the former Real Madrid playmaker.
During the Gunners’ 3-2 defeat at Chelsea earlier this month, Ozil was substituted – leading to uncertainty about his role in Emery’s new-look squad.
And Collymore, who made 64 league appearances for Arsenal’s Premier League rivals Liverpool during his playing days, has suggested that the Gunners should get rid of Ozil.
“Arsenal should let Mesut Ozil go at the end of the season because he is not the soldier Unai Emery is going to need,” Collymore wrote in his column for the Mirror.
“He requires more than technique from Ozil. Emery needs grinders and grafters. Players with less technique than him but more energy, heart and spirit.
“Ozil has coasted for the last two or three years and so have Arsenal. But Emery will have no intention of doing the same.
“They should sit down with him, shake his hand and say tell him he is a cracking player, but also a luxury player Arsenal can’t afford right now.”
Ozil joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013. Since then he has made 198 appearances in all competitions, scoring 37 goals and winning three FA Cups.
He scored just four times in the Premier League last term as Arsenal finished sixth in the top-flight.
Emery claimed Ozil missed the West Ham game because he was unwell. Whether he will return for the Londoners’ trip to Cardiff City on Sunday remains to be seen.
