West Ham played like a “big team” against Arsenal, says Pellegrini

Despite their 3-1 defeat to Arsenal, West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini has admitted he is happy with the way his side played.

The Hammers took the lead against the Gunners through Marko Arnautovic but would later succumb to intense pressure from their hosts with Nacho Monreal, Danny Welbeck and an Issa Diop own goal proving their downfall.

As a result, West Ham remain at the bottom of the Premier League as the only side still without a point after three games, conceding nine goals in the process.

But Pellegrini believes the results will eventually come for West Ham providing they keep playing as they did against Arsenal, as a “big team.”

“I think the fans appreciated the work the players put into the game and they also enjoyed the game,” he told the club’s official website.

“You can never enjoy a 3-1 defeat, but I think most parts of the game we created chances, we played as a big team and we played in the opponents’ side.

“We weren’t just trying to get a result playing with Arsenal away. This is the style we will continue with in the future and I’m absolutely sure that, if the team continues in the current way, and I hope that the fans also will continue supporting, we will win more games than we lose.

“First, what pleased me was the personality to come to Arsenal against a team with a lot of top players and play the way we played.

“After that, I think we believed we can play in another side, and we don’t just need to get a draw when we play away. This team was more free in the way they played the game against Arsenal.”

Pellegrini and West Ham will be hoping to get their season back on track when they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

West Ham’s result against Wolves could shape their season

West Ham fans will not have to go back far to find the last time they lost their first three games of a Premier League season, as they achieved the unwanted feat just last season under Slaven Bilic.

Defeats to Manchester United, Southampton and Newcastle United saw West Ham bottom after three games but the Hammers would go on to win their fourth match – against newly promoted Huddersfield Town – and eventually finish 13th.

However, the last time West Ham lost their first four games in a Premier League season, which the Hammers would match were they to lose against Wolves, things did not end as well.

Starting the 2010/11 Premier League season with defeats to Aston Villa, Bolton Wanderers, Manchester United and Chelsea, conceding 12 goals and scoring twice, West Ham found it hard to recover and were relegated at the end of the campaign, finishing bottom.
