Luke Shaw earns England recall as Southgate names 23-man squad for Spain and Switzerland

England manager Gareth Southgate has named his first squad following the World Cup campaign and there have been five changes from the roster in Russia.

The Three Lions finished fourth in Russia with performances which captivated the nation and are expected to draw big crowds for their UEFA Nations League match against Spain and friendly with Switzerland.

In the build up to the squad’s announcement, both Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill all-but announced their retirements from international football to focus on their club careers. And as a result Joe Gomez has the chance to impress once again following a fine start to the Premier League with Liverpool.

Gomez had been tipped as an outside chance to make England’s squad for the World Cup in Russia but ultimately missed out due to injury.

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has also returned to the 23-man squad, replacing his club team-mate Ashley Young after a good start to the Premier League season.

There is also a third England call-up for Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, who is still uncapped, with Nick Pope (injured) dropping out from the World Cup squad and Joe Hart snubbed once more.

James Tarkowski and Adam Lallana are the other changes from the 23-man World Cup squad, replacing Phil Jones and Vardy.

That means the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Fabian Delph have retained their places in the squad despite not featuring too often for their respective club sides so far.

Full England squad:

Goalkeepers: Jack Butland (Stoke City), Alex McCarthy (Southampton), Jordan Pickford (Everton)

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Harry Maguire (Leicester City), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), Luke Shaw (Manchester United), John Stones (Manchester City), James Tarkowski (Burnley), Kieran Trippier (Tottenham Hotspur), Kyle Walker (Manchester City)

Midfielders: Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur), Fabian Delph (Manchester City), Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), Jesse Lingard (Manchester United), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City)

Forwards: Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Danny Welbeck (Arsenal)

England welcome Spain to Wembley on September 8, before taking on Switzerland at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium on September 11.

England fans react to Southgate’s latest squad
