Inter tried to sign Luka Modric for free, claim Real Madrid

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has claimed Inter Milan tried to sign midfielder Luka Modric “without paying”.

Modric’s future had been in doubt over the summer, with Serie A club Inter trying hard to sign the Croatian who was enjoying a run to the World Cup final.

However, no deal materialised with Perez putting a €750m price tag on the World Cup Golden Ball winner’s head.

But now, the Madrid president has claimed Inter’s attempts to sign Modric from Real Madrid came with no fee.

“I’ve never seen a club want to buy our 10 without paying,” Perez was quoted as telling journalists (via beIN Sports).

“It’s the first time this has happened to me in my life.”

Modric was recently announced as UEFA Player of the Season for his part in Real Madrid’s 2017/18 Champions League victory and will be vital once more as they look to win a fourth consecutive European Cup.

The Croatian won the award ahead of former Real Madrid team-mate and Champions League top-scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as Mohamed Salah, whose goals helped Liverpool reach the final.

Modric, who turns 33 in September, joined Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 but his move was not an instant success being voted as the worst La Liga signing that year.

However, since then, the Croatian has become integral to Los Blancos, playing 260 times, scoring 13 goals and recording 39 assists.

Modric has also won four Champions Leagues, one La Liga and one Copa del Rey as well as two Spanish Super Cups, three UEFA Super Cups and three Club World Cups.
