Manuel Pellegrini has said that West Ham turned down the chance to sign Yaya Toure this summer, not the other way round.
Toure’s agent, Dimitry Seluk, claimed earlier in the week that Toure would not be joining the Hammers, with a tweet that read: “It’s not West Ham, 100%. Yaya is a champion. The last place is not for him.”
However, Pellegrini has responded by saying that he spoke to Toure himself, with the Ivorian expressing a desire to stay in the Premier League.
Pellegrini said (via Sky Sports): “Unfortunately they were the words of Yaya’s agent.
“I spoke to Yaya, I know him and appreciate him as a person. He is a very good player but in the moment, when we were doing our squad list, that position was covered for other players.
“We needed money to bring in players in other positions so we explained to Yaya clearly why he cannot come here.
“I hope he will find a good club, a big club because he is a very good player.”
The outspoken Seluk had said earlier in the week that the Ivory Coast international had undergone a medical in London, and that a move would be announced shortly – his tweet read: “Toure has passed a medical in London. Yaya is close to signing a new contract.”
That lead to a lot of speculation, partly fueled by Seluk himself, about what London-based Premier League club Toure would be joining, but it now seems like it is actually Greek giants Olympiakos with whom he held the medical.
