Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp says Simon Mignolet should have not gone public with his thoughts on the Reds’ transfer business and his current situation at the club.
Goalkeeper Mignolet, who has been seeking an exit from the club following the arrival of Alisson this summer, made some comments to Belgian media suggesting that he did not understand the club’s transfer business.
Klopp has decided to keep Mignolet until January at the very least after allowing Loris Karius to join Besiktas on a two-year loan.
The Belgian is said to have been left unhappy by the club’s decision making, but Klopp says that any problems that players have should be kept in-house.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the Reds’ Premier League clash with Leicester City, Klopp said: “He will not be leaving. In general, discussing your individual problems in public doesn’t make too much sense.
“It’s always better to speak to each other, I’m a big believer in that.
“But it was still okay. If he was happy to be a No 2 then I wouldn’t really know him. He’s a top professional, a top goalkeeper, and of course he is not happy to be No 2.
“But there are worse things in the world that being No 2 – and you are pretty well paid at Liverpool.
“In the first moment when understanding decisions or not, it’s always better to talk to me about that directly than newspapers.”
What did Mignolet say about Karius?
Former Sunderland goalkeeper Mignolet is said to have attracted interest from the likes of Napoli, Besiktas and Fulham this summer, but a transfer could not be agreed.
He claims that he was told he would not be able to leave on loan, leaving him confused by Liverpool’s decision to send Karius out on a temporary basis.
Speaking to Belgian publication Het Laatste Nieuws (via the Guardian), Mignolet said: “The transfer of Karius doesn’t change anything for me. I have always been clear: I want to play.
“Being number two or number three makes little difference. Playing minutes is the most important thing.
“Nobody has said anything to me after the departure of Loris. So I don’t know what my future at Liverpool is. We will see what happens this week.
“I find it bizarre that Karius was loaned while I also had options to be loaned. But for some reason that was not possible.
“A goalkeeper who was preferred to me last year may leave on a loan basis. Strange.”
Mignolet is expected to continue the season as deputy to Alisson, who has kept three clean sheets in his first three games for Liverpool.
