Liverpool forward Sadio Mané says he is faster than teammate Mohamed Salah and insists he has the edge on last season’s Player of the Year over long distances.
The Reds have registered three wins from as many matches so far this season, with Mané, Salah and Roberto Firmino picking up from where they left off last campaign.
Mané netted on three occasions in his first two appearances of the season, against West Ham United and Crystal Palace, with Salah having registered two goals so far.
Fans that have watched both players cause havoc on many of Europe’s defences have long since wondered who is actually the quickest of the two, but Mané has now provided his own, very confident, opinion.
Speaking to Marca, Liverpool’s number 10 said: “Yes, of course, I’m faster! Maybe not in short distances, but in 100 or 200 metres I win for sure.”
Jürgen Klopp’s side look well placed to challenge for this season’s Premier League title and Mané says his side are trying all they can to end Liverpool’s 28-year wait for a league title.
“It is a great challenge, and it is true that we have won trophies, but not the league. We’ll try to fix it this year.
“That’s why we have signed great players and it’s a great challenge to attempt the assault on the Premier League.
“Liverpool is a great club. We want to do something special, but without putting too much pressure (on ourselves).
“Now everyone is talking about us, but we have to go calmly, game by game. Let’s not talk about trophies now, it’s early. This has just begun.”
How important has Klopp been for Mané?
The Senegalese forward is into his third season at Liverpool, after heading to Anfield from Southampton in June 2016.
The former Red Bull Salzburg man has gone from strength to strength under the management of Klopp and scored in last season’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.
Mané has praised the influence of Klopp and says he’s ‘very lucky’ to have worked under the German.
“Everyone knows and speaks wonders of his personality. He is a guy who loves what he does, who motivates you, who improves you at all times and raises your level on the field.
“He has a special relationship with the players and that motivates us.
“Has it improved me as a footballer? Of course, I have got better, I learned a lot and I’m very lucky to have it.”
Liverpool have the chance to make it four wins from four this season when they face Leicester City on Saturday.
