Gerard Pique tips Man City to defend their Premier League title

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique believes Manchester City will retain their Premier League title and has backed his former manager Pep Guardiola to get the job done.

Pique, a serial winner in La Liga, knows exactly what it takes to clinch back-to-back domestic titles, having achieved that feat under the auspices of Guardiola during their time together in Catalonia.

And having now guided Manchester City to Premier League supremacy, Pique has tipped Guardiola to follow up with another title, despite both Liverpool and Chelsea significantly strengthening in personnel over the summer.

In an interview with AS, Pique said: “Liverpool are a great team with an opposite style to Guardiola and they have a great lead, we will see the challenge.

“I do not know who will win, for me, City is something more [the] favourite, but in the Champions you never know.”

The Citizens were stopped in their tracks over the weekend after failing to beat newly-promoted Wolves, though Nuno Espirito Santo’s men were rather fortuitous to come away with a point after Willy Boly appeared to score with his arm.

Despite this, Guardiola’s men remain unbeaten in their opening three matches, though both Chelsea and Liverpool have won three games from three, with the latter yet to concede a goal.

As for Pique’s former club Manchester United, the centre-back remained coy over the possible transfer of Paul Pogba to Barcelona, with the Spaniard revealing he would welcome the Frenchman to the Camp Nou.

He added: “I’m not very aware of what’s going on between them, Pogba is a great player and he’s there and we’ll see in the future if he changes club.

“It would be good if he came and would make us happy in the future, but we have to respect a player who is from Manchester.”

The Red Devils face an away trip to Burnley this weekend, while City lock horns with Newcastle on home turf.
