Marseille announce signing of Kevin Strootman with tribute to Fortnite

Marseille have confirmed the signing of midfielder Kevin Strootman from Roma on a five-year deal.

The 28-year-old had been heavily linked with a move away from Roma this summer after the arrivals of Javier Pastore and Steven Nzonzi added competition to his midfield role.

Strootman initially joined Roma from PSV Eindhoven in 2013 but his early career had been heavily marred due to injury problems, though he would go on to become a key player towards the end of his time in Rome.

And now, Ligue 1 club Marseille have announced the Netherlands international’s arrival in a move reportedly worth £22.65m with an ode to popular video game Fortnite.

The video shows someone landing on a pitch, changing into a Marseille kit and hitting someone with a username “AnnounceBalo” – a reference to the club’s failed attempt in signing Nice striker Mario Balotelli – before revealing Strootman.

Speaking at his unveiling, Stootman said: I think it’s a really big club, everybody knows that in France and Europe.

“It’s a big challenge, I’m really happy to be here. I spoke with the president, the technical director and the coach and the things they want to achieve, I am behind that.

“I want to help them achieve the goals.”

Strootman is Marseille’s third signing of the summer, joining Duje Caleta-Car and Jordan Amavi who joined from Red Bull Salzburg and Aston Villa respectively.

In his five years at Roma, Strootman 131 times across all competitions, scoring 13 goals and recording 20 assists.

‘Where are the ambitions?’ Roma fans react to Strootman’s departure

While Marseille fans would have undoubtedly been happy with their new signing, Roma supporters were upset to see the club sell yet another big player.
