Liverpool defender Joe Gomez‘s performances this season are deserving of an England call-up, according to Alan Shearer.
Gomez has started in all three of Liverpool’s Premier League games so far, in which they have kept three clean sheets and won each match.
The 21-year-old has already earned three caps for England, all of which have come under current manager Gareth Southgate, though he missed out on the World Cup squad due to injury.
But Shearer believes Gomez should be recalled to England’s squad for the upcoming international break.
“Gomez put on another powerful display against Brighton,” he told the Premier League’s official website.
“He should now earn a call-up to the England squad.”
Gomez has been starting for Liverpool in the absence of World Cup finalist Dejan Lovren, and has built a good partnership alongside Virgil van Dijk which could see him continue at centre-back even when all others are fit.
Southgate will be naming his England squad for the first international break of the season on Thursday with it largely expected to include the World Cup stars and squad players.
England, who finished fourth at the World Cup, host Spain at Wembley in their inaugural UEFA Nations League on September 8 before taking on Switzerland at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium on September 11.
Gomez’s perfect start
Starring at the heart of Liverpool’s defence, Gomez has not had a quiet start to the season with the Reds welcoming pressure from their opponents.
The 21-year-old has made more clearances than any other Liverpool player with 13.
Gomez has also won six tackles, made one block, three interceptions and been successful in nine aerial duels to help keep three consecutive clean sheets.
Liverpool next take on Leicester City away on Saturday in the Premier League.
