Leicester City manager Claude Puel says he feels sad for England fans after striker Jamie Vardy said he would be taking a step back from international football.
The 31-year-old says that now is the time to concentrate on club football, with England manager Gareth Southgate hoping to introduce a number of young players to the senior side in the coming months and years.
Leicester are expected to reap the benefits of Vardy’s decision, but Puel says it’s a shame that the striker has decided to call time on his international career.
Speaking after Leicester’s 4-0 victory over Fleetwood Town on Tuesday night, Puel said, via Goal: “We discussed it about two or three weeks ago. He took his decision and we have to respect it.
“I’m just a little sad about his decision because for fans of the national team it was a fantastic feeling to see him playing.
“But we have to respect his decision and now he dedicates his time to his club and will continue to give his best and hopefully win a trophy.”
The correct decision from Vardy?
Aside from prolonging his club career, Vardy is also believed to have made the decision with the intentions of spending more time with his family.
There is also the small matter of attempting to dislodge England’s star man Harry Kane if Vardy were to continue playing for England.
But with Vardy having netted on 63 occasions for Leicester in the Premier League so far, many will feel that the former non-league forward still has plenty to contribute.
Southgate will now have to consider other striking options for England, with Kane, Marcus Rashford and Danny Welbeck all part of the England squad that took part in the World Cup this summer.
