Former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has begun life as a manager by taking charge of the club’s Under-13 side for the duration of this season.
Alonso retired at the end of the 2017/18 season and has made no secret of his desire to become a football manager in the future.
It appears that the 36-year-old’s role with Real’s ‘Infantil A’ side is the last step necessary before he takes charge of a senior team.
Aside from Alonso, Raúl was appointed as the club’s U16 manager recently, whilst the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Guti and Santiago Solari have all coached in Real Madrid’s academy.
The former Real Sociedad, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder is looking to complete his UEFA coaching course, which he began in Madrid earlier this year.
Where could Alonso manage in the future?
Alonso has never been one to hide his admiration for Liverpool after a dream spell at the club between 2004 and 2009.
Speaking to talkSPORT at the start of this year, he admitted that he ‘has dreamt’ of being able to take charge of the Reds one day.
“Yes for sure, I have dreamt of that, but first I have to prove myself and prepare.
“If I decide somewhere along the way to take my chances as a manager, my link, my commitment, my passion with Liverpool is there.
“Why not? We will see if we can cross paths in our ways.”
He may not be the only one eyeing a future role with Liverpool, with his former midfield partner, and Kop legend, Steven Gerrard having already taken charge of Rangers.
