Klopp’s style diametrically at odds with Guardiola’s – Pique

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique believes Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp deploys a tactical system completely different to that of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Pique, a former student of Guardiola during their time together in Catalonia, suggests his former manager will come under considerable pressure this season because of the football Liverpool produce.

Klopp encourages a high-octane counter-attack, which devastated City on three occasions last term, and they are now hotly-tipped to challenge the Manchester-based club for the title.

The Reds have enjoyed a perfect start to the current campaign, winning three from three without conceding a goal, and Pique believes the key to their success is in Klopp’s opposing tactical template.

“I think Jurgen is doing a great job at Liverpool,” said Pique (via Liverpool Echo). “Because the style of play is the opposite of Guardiola.

“They really like to counter-attack and have really quick players up front and score goals with (Mohamed) Salah, (Roberto) Firmino and (Sadio) Mane.”

Asked about his verdict on the Premier League title race, Pique added: “We will see, it will be challenging for Man City, because Liverpool have a great team and I think it will be quite exciting.

“I think City are a little bit favourites, but you never know. (In the) Premier League, anything can happen.”

Guardiola clinched a domestic double last season, including a record-breaking Premier League triumph, and he will be looking to replicate those successes by winning back-to-back league titles.

His side are unbeaten so far, winning two matches against Arsenal and Huddersfield, but were held to a 1-1 draw against newly-promoted Wolves on the weekend.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager will now be looking to bounce back when his side take on Newcastle United this weekend, while Klopp travels to the King Power Stadium to take on Claude Puel’s Leicester City.
