James Rodriguez tips Dortmund to challenge Bayern’s Bundesliga dominance

Bayern Munich midfielder James Rodriguez is tipping Borussia Dortmund to be their closest challenger in the Bundesliga this season.

The Bundesliga champions have been totally dominant in Germany since the turn of the century, winning the league in 12 of the past 18 seasons including the past six in a row.

Last season saw them ease their way to another title win, finishing 21 points clear of second-placed Schalke.

However, James thinks this year will be much closer, with Dortmund his pick to run Bayern close.

He told reporters at an Adidas Tango League event in Berlin (via Goal):  “I think Borussia Dortmund will be a tough opponent in the Bundesliga, but Bayern Munich have been very successful in recent years, so we aim to be successful again this year, and if we play well we can become deserved champions.”

James, a 66-capped Colombian international, is now in the second year of his loan spell at Bayern, from Real Madrid, and despite enjoying domestic dominance with the Bavarians, he has admitted that it is in Europe where they want to make their mark this season.

Bayern’s last Champions League success came in 2013, and James added: “The Champions League is a very difficult competition, but a club like Bayern Munich must be looking to win it.

“No matter who the opponent is, we always have to play for victory. We always have to try to be successful.”

Bayern have made a strong start to their title defence, a 3-1 victory over Hoffenheim in match-week one, building on their 5-0 success against Frankfurt in the German Super Cup.

Die Roten’s next game is against Stuttgart on Saturday.
