Nomadic Seydou Doumbia joins 13th club of his career

Seydou Doumbia has added another destination to his pitstop tour of world football by joining Spanish club Girona.

The 30-year-old Ivorian has signed a three-year deal with the La Liga side, making this the 13th club of his career so far.

On his Instagram page (via BBC), Doumbia spoke of the excitement around his “new adventure”.

He said: “I’m leaving Sporting for a new adventure with Girona.

“I plan to give everything to ensure the club attains its desire to grow.

“This move to discover one of the world’s biggest football championship remains an extremely exciting challenge.”

Doumbia’s new Girona side face a trip to Villarreal on Friday.

Doumbia the nomad

This move for Doumbia is the latest in a succession of transfers which now brings his career total of clubs represented to 13.

He began his career in the youth ranks of Papua New Guinean side Centre Formation d’Inter, then moving to his native Ivory Coast where he turned out for Athletic Adjame, ASEC Mimosas and AS Denguele – the latter for whom he scored 15 goals in 20 games.

Following the success in his homeland, Doumbia then moved to Japan with Kashiwa Reysol, before enjoying a seven goals in 16 games loan spell at Japanese J2 side Tokushima Vortis.

His prolific spell with Tokushima brought him to Europe and, after scoring 57 goals in 78 for Young Boys in Switzerland, he spent four-and-a-half seasons with CSKA Moscow – the longest stay of his career to-date. His time in Moscow yielded an impressive 84 goals in 129, two Russian Premier League titles and an unusual ‘cult hero’ status in the FIFA Football video game series due to his incredibly high pace stats.

Since his Moscow days, Doumbia has gone on something of a magical mystery tour of Europe, turning up in Italy with Roma, England with Newcastle, back in Switzerland with FC Basel and Portugal with Sporting Lisbon – sandwiched between these moves was a brief return to CSKA Moscow.

Doumbia has 36 caps for the Ivory Coast so far, scoring nine goals and winning 2015 Africa Cup of Nations – this latest move gives him the chance to re-establish himself with his national side, having not featured for them in 2018.
