‘Mariano said he only wants to play for us’ – Sevilla president bemoans striker’s decision to join Real Madrid

Sevilla president Pepe Castro is disappointed with striker Mariano Diaz for opting to return to Real Madrid saying he “only wanted to play for Sevilla.”

The forward had looked set to join Sevilla, with the club having agreed a deal with Lyon for his services.

Despite this, it appears that the player will return to Real Madrid after Los Blancos chose to exercise their buy-back option on the player, having sold him to Lyon just a season before.

During his time in France, the Dominican Republic international has scored 18 goals in 37 Ligue 1 games.

Sevilla president Castro revealed that he is not angry at anyone but has sent a message to Madrid and the player as he looks set to join the capital club.

“We are an ambitious club but Real Madrid have told us that they will exercise their option to buy him,” he told AS when it looked like the striker was close to a deal with Sevilla.

“The player told us that he wants to play at Sevilla and he still hasn’t replied to us. You can suspect something from that, but there has been no reply from Mariano.

“We don’t have to ask Real Madrid anything. It’s Lyon who have an agreement with them. We have done what we had to do, that was to negotiate with the player. I’m not angry with anyone. This is football. Everyone does what’s in their interest when it’s in their interest.”

Despite saying he is not angry with anyone, it is clear that he is frustrated after Madrid showed little interest in the player all summer until Sevilla showed their hand.

“Madrid didn’t want him all summer and now that Sevilla want him, they’re interested… until the player is sitting at the president’s table and signs the contract, he is not a Sevilla player.”

He also sent out a message to the player who repeatedly said he wanted to join Sevilla.

“We are not stupid. Mariano told us many times that he only wants to play for Sevilla. I don’t know if I trust his word. He still hasn’t answered us.”

Sevilla face city rivals Real Betis in their next match as they look to continue their unbeaten start to the season.
