Monaco starlet Pellegri wants to follow in Mbappe’s footsteps

Monaco forward Pietro Pellegri has set his sights on replicating Kylian Mbappe in becoming a success at the club.

Signed from Genoa in January, Pellegri scored his first goal for Monaco at the weekend in their 2-1 defeat to Bordeaux after coming on from the bench.

In doing so, Pellegri became the second-youngest goalscorer in Monaco’s history at 17 years five months and nine days, with only wonder kid Mbappe scoring younger.

And Pellegri is hoping he can follow in Mbappe’s footsteps and set the world alight at a young age.

“Mbappe and I play in different positions,” he told RMC Info (via Football Italia).

“He plays out wide, I play through the middle. We’re young, but winning a World Cup at his age is something huge.

“For me, Mbappe’s an example to follow. I hope it’s my year, I’ve worked hard to get back into shape and show my qualities, and I hope to explode. In fact, I’ll explode this season.

“I want to do things right and show the world who I am.”

On his manager, Leonardo Jardim, Pellegri said: “Jardim has a lot of experience and has been coaching in the Champions League for seven years.

“He reached the semi-finals and won the League title. There’s nothing else to add, just that I compliment him and listen to his advice.”

Pellegri’s career so far

A product of Genoa’s youth academy, Pellegri only needed 10 first-team appearances to persuade Monaco to spend €25m on the then-16-year-old.

Pellegri’s start at Monaco has been hampered due to an injury, with the Italian making just three appearances last season.

And despite having not made the squad in Monaco’s first two Ligue 1 matches, Pellegri got his first appearance of the season in the 2-1 defeat to Bordeaux, scoring just four minutes after coming on.
