Jose Mourinho: Why Jurgen Klopp doesn’t declare himself a “great” manager

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has verbally attacked the record of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp in defence of his own record.

Mourinho has endured a tough summer at United, first not being able to bring in all of his transfer targets before making a poor start to the new Premier League season.

United have lost two of their opening three Premier League games, going down to Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur – the latter a 3-0 humbling at Old Trafford.

In his press conference after the Spurs defeat, Mourinho made note of his three Premier League titles.

And ahead of United’s game against Burnley, Mourinho has once again come out to defend himself, this time talking down Liverpool rival Klopp.

“I am the manager of one of the greatest clubs in the world but I am also one of the greatest managers in the world,” he told reporters in his pre-match press conference.

Jose was then asked whether he would still consider himself the best if we were to finish this season without a trophy, to which he replied: “Of course.

“Did you read any philosopher or in your information you never spent time reading Hegel? Just as an example, Hegel says the truth is in the whole, is always in the whole.

“Do you ask that question to the manager that finished third in the Premier League or fourth? To the manager who finished fifth.”

And when it was mentioned that Klopp had not claimed to be a great, Mourinho said: “Because he never win anything international for example.

“That’s his problem, I tell you what I think, I tell what I feel. Jurgen tells you what he wants. And I answer you the question – that’s easy.”

Both United and Liverpool finished last season without a trophy with Mourinho’s side losing an FA Cup final to Chelsea and Klopp overseeing a Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

Klopp’s trophy history

While Jose Mourinho boasts 25 major trophies throughout his managerial career, Klopp has managed three – all of which have come with Borussia Dortmund.

His first was the 2010/11 Bundesliga title, getting the better of Bayern Munich. The following season, Dortmund retained the German league and added a DFB-Pokal, beating Bayern in the final.

Klopp has also won two German Super Cups.
